Junior WAEC (BECE)

Students in their ninth year of basic education and third year of junior secondary school are required to take the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) also known as Junior WAEC.

Significance Of BECE

The BECE is significant for you for three key reasons:

In order to receive the basic education certificate and be admitted to technical institutes, it is necessary to pick the pupils who will advance from junior secondary school to senior secondary school.

Who holds the Nigerian BECE?

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council administer the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) (NECO).

The two examination boards’ roles in running the BECE are comparable but distinct.

All Nigerian public secondary schools and accredited private secondary schools may take the BECE, which is administered by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The Junior WAEC is another name for the WAEC BECE. Candidates may take the junior WAEC in June or July of each year if they are in their third year of junior secondary school.

Students must take the NECO BECE if they plan to complete their senior secondary schooling at one of the Federal Unity Colleges, Armed Forces Secondary Schools, or other Federal establishments operating Secondary schools in Nigeria. Private secondary schools may participate in the NECO BECE as long as their state ministries of education accept them.

When are you able to take the BECE?

Every year, typically in June and July, the BECE is held. Depending on the state, the precise dates could vary.

What structure does the BECE have?

The format for the BECE is the same for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO).

For all disciplines, there are two main sections of the BECE. The test with objective questions is the first. There is a list of questions and potential answers in the objective question. Candidates are asked to check the appropriate boxes next to the relevant answers. Typically, tests’ objective questions are written with a pencil and piece of paper.

The theory section makes up the second part. Students are asked to respond to the questions in the theory section. There are no possible answers in the theoretical section. The right answers must be written by the students. The theoretical section is typically written on paper with a ballpoint pen.

How does one sign up for the BECE?

Those students who are eligible to take the BECE can sign up at their secondary school. Candidates for the BECE may be registered at any secondary school in Nigeria that is public or government-owned.

Candidates can also enroll for the BECE at private secondary schools that have received approval from the State Ministry of Education or the Federal Government.

What subjects are included in the BECE?

At the BECE level, there are 25 subjects given. An applicant must take a minimum of ten and a maximum of thirteen subjects. If a candidate receives passes in six subjects—including English and mathematics—they are considered to have passed the BECE.

The primary topics covered by the BECE include the following:

Mathematics, English, English-language literature, Agricultural Science, Integrated Science (Basic Science), Fine Art, Physical Education, Yoruba, and Basic Science.

• Hausa

Social studies, business studies, Islamic and Christian religious studies, music, computer science, home economics, basic technology, and French are among the other subjects.

How is the BECE evaluated?

The BECE is graded similarly by WAEC and NECO. The BECE grading scale looks like this:

A distinction, a credit, a pass, or a failing grade.

Candidates must receive a grade of Pass or above in each topic to pass the BECE. Any applicant who fails the English and math portions of the BECE automatically fails the exam and must retake it the following year.
