An Overview of JAMB

There were seven (7) Federal Universities in the nation by the year 1974.

Each of these institutions of higher learning currently in existence held its own concessional examination and admitted students.

However, this admissions procedure exposed significant flaws and frequently resulted in resource waste, particularly on the part of the applicants, while administering the concessional examination.

The committee of vice-chancellors had good reason to be worried about the general disarray in the disjointed system of university admissions and the ensuing issues.

But by 1976, when six more colleges were founded by the then federal military government, led by General Olusegun Obasanjo, these issues had taken on a new dimension.

As a result, the government established a national committee on university admissions, which is now led by Mr. M. S. Angulu.

The Committee was expressly asked to take into account the establishment of a Joint Matriculation Board.

The Central Admissions Board and the Joint Matriculation Board were the two (2) organizations that the Committee recommended be established.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board was established by the Federal Military Government after some of the committee’s recommendations were adopted.

However, on February 13, 1978, the Federal Military Government passed Act No. 2 of 1978, which served as the official document establishing the Board.

In order to enable the Board to administer matriculation exams for admission to all polytechnics and colleges of education across the nation and to place adequately qualified applicants in these institutions’ open spots, the Federal Executive Council revised decree No. 2 of 1978 by August 1988.

The modifications were then codified in decree No. 33 of 1989, which became operative on December 7th, 1989.
